Texas Dept Transportation Plans to Improve Mustang Island’s Main HwyThe Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will conduct an Open House regarding the recommendations of the State Highway (SH) 361 Feasibility Study. This study evaluated the future roadway needs along SH 361 between Port Aransas and Park Road 22 (SPID).

It’s a scenic ocean drive that is 17 miles on Mustang Island between Corpus Christi (SPID) and Port Aransas.
It currently takes about 20 minutes to travel, but traffic is growing at about six percent per year and TxDOT officials said in 10 years, it'll take an hour to make the same trip, unless SH 361 grows with the population.
During peak summer periods and special event weekends, tourists and residents experience considerable delays entering and exiting the islands.
The North Padre-Mustang Islands area is forecasted to experience tremendous growth within the next 20 years. Several developments are in the design or planning stages and extensive development is projected. Added development will increase congestion on SH 361. This expected growth has necessitated this study to investigate future travel capacity needs of SH361 and the impacts of those capacity requirements on this scenic corridor with regards to right of way, environmental, utility, financial, evacuation, and aesthetics.
