International Boat Show Attracts Businesses To Corpus Christi Marina The brand new, and state-of the-art, Corpus Christi downtown marina, with space for 200 wide beamed motor yachts, will make cruising the Texas Gulf Coast a reality.
Boaters from Houston and Galveston will be able to clear their waters and sail south with the guarantee of sandy beaches, blue water and, most importantly, slip availability at the Corpus Christi facility. Partial funding for this project was made available by the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council.
The Corpus Christi downtown marina does away with the need to keep a boat on the east coast USA with all the time related problems and inconvenience this entails. Convenience, realistic slip rates, blue water cruising and great offshore fishing make Mayor Garrett's vision of establishing Corpus Christi as the boating capital of the Southwest a distinct probability, but whichever way you cut it Texas has just taken a huge step forward as a boating and cruising region.
Peter Davidson, the superintendent for the Corpus Christi Marina described it by saying that it will have 660 boat slips with 50 dry storage slips when completed. The city's offices, hotels and retail stores overlook the new marina, which is just a short five-minute walk from downtown. Marina visitors can walk to and from lunch and shop while they visit the Corpus Christi area.
The main project initiated eight years ago when Davidson became the superintendent and began applying for grants from the federal government to help with the boating infrastructure. More money was obtained by increasing the slip rates and obtaining loans to dredge and build a $1 million boat ramp, a 160-slip floating dock marina, and state-of the-art boater's facilities, including bathrooms and laundry.
The project will cost $8 million once it has been completed, a million of which was spent on just the electrical system in order to allow for sufficient power. | The Texas Riviera finally becomes a reality in 2007 as Corpus Christi completes one of the most ambitious marina construction projects seen in the region for more than 30 years. To celebrate this achievement in marina planning and construction, Corpus Christi hosted the Texas International Boat Show, the first ever blue water and in-water show for the whole Southwest region of the USA. Four hundred boats, both inwater and onshore, plus a classic car expo, awaited visitors from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and much further afield.
| An exciting new enhancement to the Marina is the addition of four state-of-the-art floating piers designed especially for the Marina. The floating docks will include vacuum sewage and state-of-the-art electrical systems for boats ranging from 50-foot to 150-foot.
Amenities for boaters include a fuel dock, free sanitary pump out station, air conditioned showers, restrooms and laundry, four public boat ramps, wet slips, dry storage and board boat racks. Boat ramps are located on Cooper's Alley.
A special work area is provided where tenants may perform maintenance and minor repairs. A boat repair facility, equipped with a 15 ton travel lift, is designated for contracted repairs.
The highly qualified Marina staff performs search and rescue missions, monitors the Coast Guard Channel 16 and is available for assistance as needed. The Marina staff and the Corpus Christi Police Department provide 24 hour patrols.
To celebrate this achievement in marina planning and construction, Corpus Christi hosted the Texas International Boat Show, the first ever blue water and in-water show for the whole Southwest region of the USA. The annual Boat Show, which took place from April 26-29, 2007, was one of many of the new projects and developments which have been realized during the term of Mayor Henry Garrett, the once chief of police, who had the vision and saw where Corpus Christi's future may someday lay. Four hundred boats, both inwater and onshore, plus a classic car expo, awaited visitors from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and much further afield.
Up and down the walk on the Corpus Christi Marina, guests have had a chance to tour high dollar yachts and luxury boats. For dealers, many of these people can be potential buyers, and dealers are praising the first Texas International Boat Show. They are so impressed with the show, they're willing to start businesses right here on the marina.
"Corpus Christi is an excellent location for the yachting industry, this is big sport fishing territory, and maybe in two months, we'll have offices here," Jim Hedges of Lone Star Yacht Sales said. "Right now we have offices in Houston, but we'll be looking forward to doing business here." Hedges said this weekend's show is a great opportunity to sell his yachts, and the rest of his business will take notice very soon.
"I believe that Corpus Christi is going to be the headquarters for the marine industry in the Gulf," he said. His company viewed the show as a great showcase for their directive--to bring the luxury yacht market to Texas. |
